The Forgotten ‘Sum’

Share

In “The Sum of All Fears,” I thought the emotional impact of the nuclear whitewash scenes in Baltimore was diminished by the film’s tidy ending (“A Fearful Sum Recalculated,” by Kenneth Turan, June 23). Odd how this history-shaping event barely consumed its main characters, whose courageous actions prevented the world from ending.

Wrapping up, Jack Ryan and new fiancee picnic pleasantly outside the White House, some 50 miles from ground zero, swapping diplomatic winks with the Ruskies.

Yes, life goes on (for some), but the obliterated city and its dead are not even mentioned, seemingly forgotten. Oh well to what ends well.
