Tiger Woods won three of the 34 categories, including best male athlete, at the ESPY Awards ceremony Wednesday night at Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre. He also was recognized as the best male golfer and for the best record-breaking performance as the winner of four consecutive major championships in 2000 and 2001.

Venus Williams was named best female athlete and best female tennis player.

The ESPY award winners were chosen by the ESPY Academy, a 151-member, industry-wide panel consisting of athletes, coaches and print and broadcast journalists.

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award was presented to United Flight 93 passengers Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, Tom Burnett and Jeremy Glick--each of whom had strong sports connections.
