A male jogger was struck and killed by a train Sunday along the tracks near the border of San Juan Capistrano and Laguna Niguel, authorities said.

A conductor of a northbound Amtrak train saw the body about five feet from the tracks, half a mile north of Junipero Serra Road, and alerted authorities at 12:30 p.m. The victim has been identified as Michael Warde Remley, 37, of Mission Viejo.

Lt. Larry Abbott of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said investigators found no evidence to suggest that the northbound Amtrak was the train that hit the man.

Police believe Remley was a jogger because of his clothing.

“The body does appear to have been hit by a train,” Abbott said.

“But the facts are not clear enough to indicate that this was accidental or intentional. It’s a puzzle right now.” The Sheriff’s Department stopped Amtrak and Santa Fe freight trains in the area for about four hours to investigate.
