A Mission Viejo man struck by a train on a remote stretch of track in San Juan Capistrano took his own life, the Orange County coroner’s office said Monday.

The body of Michael Warde Remley, 37, was spotted near the tracks about half a mile north of Junipero Serra Road at 12:55 p.m. Sunday by the conductor of a northbound Amtrak train.

The body was found in an area near a horse stable and orange groves.

Remley, wearing blue shorts and a white T-shirt, was originally thought to have been struck accidentally while jogging. But Cullen Ellenburgh of the Orange County coroner’s office said an investigation determined that the death was a suicide.

It is still unclear what time Remley was struck or which train hit him.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department found no evidence to suggest that the northbound Amtrak was involved.

The Sheriff’s Department stopped Amtrak and Santa Fe freight trains in the area Sunday afternoon for about four hours to investigate.
