A 72-year-old Mission Viejo man apparently drowned Monday after bumping his head on the bottom of relative’s pool while swimming with his 6-year-old granddaughter, officials said. The man was identified as William Morgan.

The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. at a home in the 25300 block of Bentley Lane in Laguna Hills.

“Apparently he dove into the pool and hit his head,” said Lt. Greg Russell of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

“The little girl did a great thing--ran to the phone and called 911,” he said.

A deputy dove into the pool to rescue Morgan, Russell said. Despite receiving CPR in the ambulance, he said, Morgan was pronounced dead at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center.

“We don’t know if [the death resulted] from the diving accident or was medically related,” said Capt. Stephen Miller of the Orange County Fire Authority.

An autopsy would be needed to determine the exact cause of death, he said.
