‘Irregular’ Gifts Bound for Fox Campaign Cited

Banking records show that prohibited foreign funds and other “irregular contributions” were headed to President Vicente Fox during his 2000 campaign, election officials said.
A Fox spokesman refused to comment, saying the investigation had “just begun.”
Jaime Cardenas of the Federal Electoral Institute said it was too early to tell if Fox’s campaign did anything illegal because authorities could not yet prove the campaign received the funds.
Cardenas said investigators have also found indications that a former top aide and close friend of Fox, Carlos Rojas, may have received payments from foreign companies during the campaign.
