Pilots Tried to Avoid Collision, Data Show
Flight data and voice recordings reveal that the cockpit crews of two planes that collided over southern Germany, killing 71 people, saw each other and attempted last-second maneuvers to avoid hitting, investigators said.
A Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev-154 and a DHL Airways Boeing 757 cargo jet collided July 1 after both descended--the Russian plane in response to an air traffic controller’s instruction, the cargo jet in response to its computer.
The Russian pilot, however, was warned by his computer to climb just seconds before impact, investigators said.
