Hofmans Has Busy Day

Share

Trainer Dave Hofmans is hoping for a formful result in the $250,000 Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park and an upset in the $350,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park.

Hofmans, who is winning at about 20% for the year, will send out likely favorite Adoration in Delaware and longshot Linda Eder in New York.

A daughter of Honor Grades owned by Amerman Racing, Adoration was a two-time stakes winner this spring at Hollywood Park. She followed her win in the Senorita on turf with a main track score in the Hollywood Oaks. Garrett Gomez will ride Adoration, who will have seven opponents in the Grade III, which is run at 1 1/16 miles on dirt.

Owned by Jerry Frankel and named for his friend, a singer who performed at Belmont Park on Belmont Stakes day, Linda Eder is likely to be the longest price in the CCA Oaks, a 1 1/2-mile Grade I and the final leg of New York’s Triple Tiara for 3-year-old fillies.

Linda Eder, the thoroughbred, has won two of her last three, but those races were on the grass and today’s race will be only her second start on dirt. In her only other outing on the main track, she was second against maidens over a sloppy surface on March 9 at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

The likely favorite is Chamrousse, who has won three of seven for trainer Niall O’Callaghan.

Most recently, she was second as the 6-5 choice in the Mother Goose, which was won by Nonsuch Bay.

Race of the day: The fifth is a wide-open turf route (1 1/16 miles) for older claimers racing for a $40,000 tag. It is also the third leg of the Churchill Downs simulcast network pick four. The other races in the wager are the 12th from Calder, the ninth from Arlington Park and the ninth from Ellis Park.

Who’s hot: John Velasquez. The jockey has been consistent throughout Belmont Park’s meet, which ends Sunday, and he is going to win the title.

Who’s not: La Chaiym. The 5-year-old gelding, who has lost his last four starts by a combined 116 1/2 lengths, is in for more punishment in today’s seventh at Hollywood Park.

Exotically speaking: A pick three with The Denver Dream, Saucy Cat and Dinnerathepalms in the third, singling Retro Fever in the fourth and Lammas, Worthy Deed and Come Back Ronnie in the fifth.

Winners (through Thursday): Previous day/meet total: 1/163. Money: Previous day/meet total: $6.60/$923.40. Total money bet: $1,066.
