Washburn Puts Streak on Line

Share

Jarrod Washburn has won 11 consecutive decisions since starting the season 0-2. The 27-year-old Angel left-hander has not lost since April 13 and owns the longest single-season winning streak in franchise history.

Washburn (11-2) has already matched his victory total of last season when he finished 11-10.

“Every time out, I’m being consistent,” said Washburn, who pitches tonight. “It’s the first time in my career I’ve really done that for a long period of time.

“I’m nowhere as good as I want to be or as good as I think I can be, but I’m happy the way things are going.

“You can’t go out there worrying when it’s going to end. It’s going to end someday. I’m going to lose. Hopefully, it’s not soon.”

Matt Wise knew the move was probably coming when the Angels activated Al Levine from the disabled list, but Wise was still disappointed when the club sent him to triple-A Salt Lake after Friday night’s game.

Wise, 26, pitched a scoreless ninth against the Seattle Mariners before receiving word that he was going back to Salt Lake for the third time this season. Wise is out of options, meaning the Angels must keep him in the major leagues next season or put him on waivers.

“I know I’m going to have a long career in the big leagues and every time I get sent down it’s more motivation for me to prove that I can pitch at this level,” said Wise, who has a 3.24 earned-run average in 8 1/3 innings over seven major league appearances this season. “I still hope my future is with the Angels.”
