Dengue Fever Outbreak Hits 14-Year High

More than 400 Taiwanese have caught dengue fever in the last month, the largest number of cases in 14 years, the government said.
The outbreak of the illness--which is carried by mosquitoes and can be fatal if untreated--might have been caused by warmer temperatures, an increase in rainfall and lax efforts to clear out standing water that breeds mosquitoes, health officials said. Since last month, 410 cases have been reported. Symptoms range from headaches, cramps, rashes and severe muscle and back pain to shock and hemorrhages leading to death.
