A man killed while driving away in a car he had just stolen in Reseda was identified Friday by police.

Jose Gonzalez Hernandez, 28, of Northridge was shot in the head about 3:15 p.m. Thursday while driving a stolen Honda Accord on the 6600 block of Etiwanda Avenue, Los Angeles Police Lt. Gary Hallden said.

Hallden said Hernandez and as many as five other men in a red or maroon Toyota had approached a father and son--the son a man in his early 20s on foot and the father the driver of the Honda, which had halted. The newcomers fought with the father and son, who ran away, he said.

Hernandez jumped into the abandoned car and drove south on Etiwanda, followed by his friends in the other vehicle, Hallden said.

Shots were fired at the cars, Hallden said.

Hernandez was hit, but drove a few more blocks. He collapsed after fleeing the vehicle on Kittridge Street, near Lindley Avenue, Hallden said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The father and son were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries suffered in the fight. Their conditions were not released.

The other car fled. No arrests have been made, police said.
