Camden Provides an Answer for Iverson

Allen Iverson is awaiting trial on counts of four felonies and 10 misdemeanors, but the Philadelphia 76er star is losing no support from his fans. During a Celebrity Summer Classic softball game in Camden, N.J., Camden Mayor Gwendolyn Faison said, “Philadelphia, if you don’t give [Iverson] enough love, come home to Camden.”

Celebrity Classic spokeswoman Novella Williams said: “I stand committed with my other young women to free him from the powers of evil. He is a wholesome, decent, God-fearing young man. We cannot allow another young African-American millionaire to be taken down by a system that can’t bear to see young African-American men who are taking care of their families. Allen, you can’t lose, because God has more power than the devil.”

Trivia time: What pitcher walked more batters, threw more wild pitches and lost more games than anyone in the 20th century?

The way it is: From Blackie Sherrod in the Dallas Morning News: “The way we understand it, there’s no Mrs. Shaq, but there are four little Shaqs. Sez Mr. O’Neal: ‘I’m going to be the best dad I can be to my four kids and take care of their mothers. I’m not perfect, but I’m responsible.’ ”

Dr. Daly: John Daly can’t do anything, it seems, without being different.

During the British Open he dislodged a piece of glass that he said had been stuck in his hand for years. This week, playing in the Dutch Open, he aggravated the injury after playing 11 holes in a pro-am and couldn’t stop the bleeding.

So did he go to a doctor? No, he put Super Glue on it. His rationale: “I don’t care that it’s unwise medically. I’m not going to watch it bleed.”

Summer job: It was hot in Carlisle, Pa., where the Washington Redskins were practicing, so some neighborhood children set up a stand outside Dickinson College’s Biddle Field to sell water, soda and homemade cookies to spectators.

After a couple of days, they were told to leave by security guards.

“I don’t know what the big deal was, we were just sitting there, not bothering anybody,” said 9-year-old Henry Kohler. Nick Stamos, college vice president, said it was because of liability, that the school could be held responsible if people got sick from the food the children were selling.

Friday, Dickinson College announced it will help the youths sell cookies at a site next to the college’s concession stand. The cookies will be made in the college’s state-licensed kitchen.

Trivia answer: Nolan Ryan, 2,795 walks, 277 wild pitches, 292 losses.

And finally: Tyrone Willingham, the new Notre Dame coach, told university historian Terence Moore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about his version of the definitive Notre Dame player:

“I’m looking for a tough player, but not the kind you see in the world’s toughest man competition, where they go into a barroom and fight and those types of things. I’m looking for the young man that, when he’s between those stripes, that will take great pleasure in knocking your head off. I mean, literally, knocking your head off. Then, when the game’s over, I’d like for him to have the toughness and the confidence to walk off the field and say, ‘Please. Thank you. No, sir. Yes, ma’am.’ ”
