James Ricci and others had better think again about the issue of Native American school mascots (“School Nicknames: Let There Be Color,” Metropolis, July 7). The issue is not about the Fighting Irish, Conquistadors, Vikings or any other group. We’re talking about disrespectful images in non-Indian schools of the first Americans and how they affect children of Indian heritage. This includes my children. It was not an honor to have a caricature of a big-nosed Indian painted inside our school gym. The schools can’t go back and change their sad display of racism. The damage has been done.

I am 50% Norwegian, 25% Irish and 25% Dutch. I do not mind the school nicknames Vikings and Fighting Irish. If a school wishes to name its team the Wooden Shoes, Clogs or Tulips, it has my blessings as well as my condolences.

I enjoyed Ricci’s column on school nicknames. I thought he might be interested in one that I came across in Arizona: the Criminals at Yuma High School.
