Follow the Lewis and Clark Route--Backward

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Take a voyage into history with a fall cruise along the Columbia River Gorge that will follow the path taken by early 19th century explorers Lewis and Clark.

The seven-day expedition begins and ends in Portland, Ore., where travelers board a 70-passenger ship that wends its way through some of the regions explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Corps of Discovery nearly 200 years ago.

At the request of President Jefferson, the explorers traveled thousands of miles, searching for a northwest passage--a river or series of connected rivers that would cross the Western mountains and reach the Pacific Ocean.

The Lindblad Expeditions cruise will reverse the Lewis and Clark journey, traveling from the mouth of the Columbia River to Idaho, more than 450 miles upstream. Along the route, the ship will traverse the locks of the Columbia, visit Astoria, Ore., and sail up the Snake River. The group will visit Hells Canyon, Idaho, by jet boat.

Inflatable Zodiac boats and kayaks are often used to explore remote shorelines and regions such as the Palouse River, a tributary of the Snake River.

Historians and naturalists will act as guides.

Cost: Rates begin at $1,793 per person, double occupancy, for sailings Oct. 30 and 31 or Nov. 5 and 6. Other departures are planned between Sept. 30 and Oct. 25, beginning at $2,390 per person. Air fare to Portland is not included.
