Engine Trouble Forces O.C. Jet to Land at LAX
An engine failed on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 during takeoff from John Wayne Airport on Tuesday, forcing the pilots to make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said.
Flight 1938 to Atlanta, carrying 159 passengers and a crew of eight, landed safely about 9:03 a.m. No one was injured. The airliner’s scheduled departure from Orange County was 8:45 a.m.
The twin-engine jetliner had just taken off when the pilot reported that an engine had failed, said Los Angeles airport spokesman Tom Winfrey. Anthony Black, a Delta official, said he was unsure why the engine on the right wing stalled.
The plane was diverted to LAX, 35 miles northwest of John Wayne, and emergency equipment was deployed as a precaution, Winfrey said.
