County Plans to Raise Pay of Sheriff’s Deputies
County officials are giving deputies a 12% raise to stop them from leaving the Sheriff’s Department for higher-paying agencies. The problem is so serious that the deputies’ union didn’t have to reopen negotiations with the county.
Sheriff’s administrators explained the dire situation to county officials last week, and the decision was made to offer a raise. Supervisors are expected to formally approve the move July 9.
The department has 30 vacancies, which has forced deputies to be pulled off special assignments and put back on patrol duty. About a third of the openings were caused by retirements and military leave, but half the deputies left for other agencies.
