Police Chief Ronald Lowenberg, the city’s top cop for nearly 13 years, will retire Oct. 18, officials said this week.

Under Lowenberg’s tenure, the Police Department set up several substations and increased community-policing efforts in high-crime neighborhoods.

Lowenberg, 55, headed the Cypress Police Department before becoming Huntington Beach’s chief in 1989. He began his career in Cypress in 1967. From 1977 to 1981, he served as a police lieutenant and captain in Baldwin Park and Tustin, respectively. He returned to Cypress as its chief in 1981.
