Murky Drinking Water Is Now Being Filtered

Share

Water from 2,000 feet underground is now being filtered to remove its iced-tea color, then sent to customers of Irvine Ranch Water District, officials said Thursday.

The water from the deepest part of the vast aquifer beneath Orange County was tinted by redwood trees and other vegetation that grew in the area millions of years ago. The water is of high purity, but the color had made it unpalatable, officials said.

A project to filter the water cost $16 million and took two years to dig two wells and build a treatment facility in Santa Ana.
