Oxnard school district officials have agreed to study the possibility of converting one of their elementary schools into a kindergarten-through-eighth-grade campus.

The format, popular in private schools, could relieve overcrowding in the district’s three middle schools and provide a different environment for adolescent students, Supt. Richard Duarte said.

The board will convene a task force to study the concept and how it could be applied to any of the district’s 14 elementary schools.

Duarte said grouping elementary and middle school students seems to help the older students make better connections with their school environment.

The district is still negotiating to buy 27 acres behind Oxnard High School on which it hopes to build an intermediate school. That campus would be needed to meet enrollment demands even if a K-8 school were created, Duarte said.
