Here’s something not seen much these days in the tight-checking NHL: a wide-open game.

Wednesday night’s game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs featured plenty of skating and scoring chances.

Detroit took advantage of the extra room, with Sergei Fedorov scoring twice and the Red Wings getting three power-play goals in a 6-2 victory at Detroit.

The Red Wings, who won their seventh in a row, have the league’s best record at 45-11-6-2 (98 points). Toronto has 76 points.

“Clubs enjoy space and time and they had a lot of it,” Toronto Coach Pat Quinn said.

Quinn said he was especially disappointed with the effort of his top line of Mats Sundin, Jonas Hoglund and Mikael Renberg.

Trailing, 4-0, Toronto got a power-play goal and a short-handed goal in the second period.

But Fedorov’s second goal of the game, his 23rd this season, made it 5-2 only 38 seconds into the third period.

Sundin’s short-handed goal cut the deficit to 4-2 with 2:10 left in the second period.

He was able to poke a shot into an empty net while lying on the ice after stripping Igor Larionov of the puck and chipping it through the legs of Dominik Hasek, who was charging out of the net.

Edmonton 3, Tampa Bay 2--Ethan Moreau’s short-handed goal 2:56 into the third period lifted the Oilers at Tampa, Fla.

Dave Andreychuk gave the Lightning a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 17:30 of the first period. He also had an assist for his 300th career multi-point game.

Andreychuk has 242 career power-play goals and trails career leader Phil Esposito by seven.

Washington 3, Calgary 2--Sergei Gonchar scored with 2:04 remaining in regulation for the Capitals at Washington, tying a career high with his 21st goal.

Jarome Iginla scored a league-leading 40th goal.

Montreal 5, Boston 3--Joe Juneau scored goals 35 seconds apart for the Canadiens only 53 seconds into the game at Montreal.

Juneau also set up a goal and has six points in his last two games.

Colorado 4, Columbus 1--Steven Reinprecht had a goal and two assists, and backup goalie David Aebischer stopped 32 shots for the Avalanche at Denver.

Aebischer had his shutout streak of 148 minutes 2 seconds ended in the first period.
