“Jose Clemente Orozco in the United States,” the first exhibition to focus on artworks created by the Mexican social realist painter during his seven-year stay in the U.S., begins an international tour Saturday at the San Diego Museum of Art. The survey includes paintings, drawings, lithographs and mural studies by Orozco, and will be complemented by a two-day symposium this weekend with noted scholars and leading Southern California muralists.

Get Mamie Eisenhower, Eleanor Roosevelt and Jackie Kennedy together in a room and what have you got? A musical. A cast of Broadway veterans will take on those historic roles, as well as Margaret Truman and other White House notables, in the world premiere of Michael John La Chiusa’s revised musical, “First Lady Suite.” Presented by Blank Theatre Company, it’s a wild musical time trip through the lives of America’s first ladies and the people closest to them.

British jazz diva Cleo Laine and her husband, composer-saxophonist John Dankworth, will perform in concert Saturday at Cal State Northridge. Laine, one of the most acclaimed singers of the last 40 years, remains the only singer to receive Grammy nominations in the female jazz, pop and classical categories. She and Dankworth have been making music together since the 1950s.

Now an upperclassman at Juilliard, Malibu’s Andrew von Oeyen gives twin recital performances at Pepperdine University this weekend. His repertory: Beethoven’s Sonata in D, Opus 10, No. 3; Alban Berg’s Opus 1 Sonata; David Newman’s “Antipodal Rag”; short pieces by Debussy; and Three Movements from Stravinsky’s “Petrushka.” Von Oeyen, who made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 17, was the recipient of the prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award in 1999, and performs as a soloist and recitalist in the U.S. and abroad.
