Six Flee Unharmed From Blaze at Lido Isle House

A two-story house on Newport Harbor’s Lido Isle was destroyed by fire early Thursday, causing about $1.5 million in damage, Newport Beach authorities said.

Six people in the home when the fire broke out at 4:39 a.m. escaped without injury.

Fire officials did not identify the residents.

The bay-front home had smoke detectors, but the batteries had been removed.

“The residents are lucky to be alive,” Capt. Mike Murphy said. “This was a major fire.”

Thirty firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other homes, which are squeezed together on the island.

The fire apparently started in the garage and spread quickly, officials said.

The cause is under investigation.
