A snowboarder was killed at the Sugar Bowl Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe on Friday afternoon when the ledge he was standing on collapsed, hurling him down a mountainside and burying him in a deep snowbank.

The victim, a man in his 20s whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, was snowboarding with two friends when the accident occurred at the 8,300-foot level on Mt. Judah, officials said.

Placer County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Whigham said it took search dogs 45 minutes to dig down to the victim. He was airlifted to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s two companions were able to leap to safety and were not injured, Whigham said.
