Fowlkes, Overton Fill Injury Holes

Coach Alvin Gentry had no update to give on injured Clippers Keyon Dooling, Corey Maggette and Lamar Odom. It’s not that he’s unconcerned about them, but Gentry can’t wish them back to health.

It’s possible Dooling (ankle), Maggette (hand and knee) and Odom (wrist and ankle) will be sidelined for the rest of the regular season. Gentry said he will know more about their status when the team returns to L.A. today.

Odom is perhaps the closest of the three to being fit to play, although that’s asking a great deal from him.

“We’ve got to be prepared to play with what we have here,” Gentry said Monday. “So far, the guys we’ve asked to step up have done that for us.”

Forward Tremaine Fowlkes and guard Doug Overton are expected to be signed for the rest of the season after their 10-day contracts run out, Gentry said.

Fowlkes has signed two 10-day deals already and is entrenched as the team’s starting small forward.

Overton has become Jeff McInnis’ backup at point guard.

Eric Piatkowski outplayed Wally Szczerbiak, his counterpart at shooting guard, which was one of several keys to the Clippers’ victory Monday over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Piatkowski outscored him, 14-7, badgering him with a brand of defense not often seen this season.

“I was able to watch some film and I saw how he likes to get his shots,” Piatkowski said. “I let the other guys worry about Kevin Garnett. When you just stay on one guy, it’s pretty easy to guard him. And it’s not like he likes to put the ball on the floor. He’s a lot like me.”

Minnesota Coach Flip Saunders was ejected after drawing two technical fouls with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter and the teams tied, 57-57. Referee Jack Nies bounced Saunders after hearing several magic words. Assistant coach Jerry Sichting took over for Saunders.... The Clippers play host to the Michael Jordan-less Washington Wizards at Staples Center on Wednesday.
