Live With Coyotes

Re “Fleeing Drought, Coyotes Roam Neighborhoods,” March 12: As an owner of a West Highland terrier that was attacked by a coyote and survived, I am disturbed by what appears to be a quick fix to the coyote problem. I wish I didn’t have to worry about them, but trapping and killing these animals is not the answer. The solution is to learn to live with the coyotes.

After my dog was attacked, I did some research and found that there are ways to keep coyotes away from your animals. There are simple things that can be done, such as feeding your pet indoors and not leaving your pet outside, especially at night. If you must leave your pet outside, provide a covered dog-run. Coyotes come with the territory in Southern California; they are not our pets’ enemy. We must first try to learn to live with them before we declare war on them.
