Maple Leafs Win With Backup Plan

With Curtis Joseph out with an injury, Toronto is playing inspired hockey in front of backup goalie Corey Schwab.

Schwab made 19 saves to help the Maple Leafs beat the Bruins, 2-1, Thursday night at Boston. It was Toronto’s fourth victory this season over Boston.

Schwab, who has made eight consecutive starts, has allowed only four goals in the last four games. Toronto is 2-0-2 during that stretch.

Alyn McCauley scored the winning goal when he lifted a shot over a fallen Byron Dafoe during a scramble in front at 14:38 of the second period.

Buffalo 3, Philadelphia 1--Miroslav Satan scored twice to help the Sabres beat the Eastern Conference-leading Flyers at Philadelphia.

Buffalo has won four of five, moving within three points of the New York Rangers for the final playoff spot in the conference.

Tampa Bay 3, Calgary 2--Pavel Kubina scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 8:35 left as the Lightning won at Tampa, Fla. Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin made 30 saves and improved to 14-1-2 against the Flames.

Atlanta 2, Colorado 0--Milan Hnilicka had 23 saves and posted the fifth shutout of his career to help the Thrashers, the team with the worst record in the NHL, win at Atlanta.

Edmonton 4, Ottawa 1--Anson Carter scored his 23rd goal as the Oilers won at Ottawa to extend their unbeaten streak against the Senators to 13.

Vancouver 5, Columbus 1--Matt Cooke and Brendan Morrison each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks at Columbus, Ohio.

Montreal 3, Dallas 3--Brad Lukowich scored his first goal of the season with 8:01 left in regulation to help the Stars earn a point at Montreal.
