Pick Six Pool Will Overflow

Share

Another Wednesday at Santa Anita, another pick six carry-over.

It is becoming almost routine that nobody isolates the final six winners of the afternoon on Sunday’s card, giving bettors two days to put together a bankroll to attack the pick six on Wednesday.

More than $193,000 is waiting in the pot and the pool could swell to close to $1 million before the sequence starts with the third race, a $10,000 claimer for older fillies and mares.

Those who prefer sprints to routes will enjoy today’s program. Six of the eight races are seven furlongs or less and five of the six in the pick six are around one turn.

The only two-turn race in the sequence is the fourth, a miler for $12,500 claimers. Yankee Pirate, already a two-time winner at the meet for trainer Bill Spawr, is the probable favorite under Laffit Pincay Jr.

The pick six is completed by a six-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies running for a $40,000 claiming price, a 61/2-furlong race for $25,000 maiden claimers, a seven-furlong allowance for older California-breds and a seven-furlong event for 3-year-old maiden fillies competing for a $40,000 tag.

The day also brings the first 2-year-old race of 2002. A full field of 10 California-bred fillies will run a quarter of a mile. Among the new sires represented are Swiss Yodeler, a prolific 2-year-old who won the Hollywood Futurity a few years back, and Souvenir Copy, who won the Del Mar Futurity for trainer Bob Baffert.

Race of the day: Party Queen, a promising 3-year-old daughter of Cozzene, will try to remain unbeaten in her third start when she takes on seven others in the eighth at Gulfstream Park. The race is at a mile on the turf.

Who’s hot: Ian Jory. Besides winning the San Luis Obispo with the overdue Continental Red on Saturday, the trainer took the $150,000 Pelleteri Breeders’ Cup Handicap with 7-1 shot Explicit on Sunday at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Who’s not: Don Warren. The trainer has begun the year two for 51. He will send out Ruhl An Rein in today’s sixth at Santa Anita.

Exotically speaking: A pick three using Lady Cara, J Vivendi and Salish Slew in the second, singling Sentimental Secret in the third and using Yankee Pirate, In Season and Under Surveillance in the fourth.
