The State Department issued a terrorist alert for Italy because of a “possible threat” by extremist groups to U.S. citizens there, especially in Venice, Florence, Milan and Verona. The alert takes effect immediately and applies particularly to Easter weekend, although it extends through April 25, department spokesman Richard Boucher said Wednesday.

The alert advises Americans to increase their awareness and avoid large crowds.

“Civilian targets may include facilities where Americans and the general public are usually known to congregate or visit, such as clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools or outdoor recreation events,” the statement said.

Thousands of Americans live in Italy or travel there this time of year, both for Easter weekend and spring vacations.
