Trail Blazers Put End to Spurs’ Win Streak

Bonzi Wells scored 24 points and started a late run with a three-point basket as the Portland Trail Blazers defeated San Antonio, 98-93, Wednesday night at Portland, ending the Spurs’ 13-game winning streak.

Dale Davis added 19 points for the Trail Blazers, who played the final three quarters without leading scorer Rasheed Wallace, who left because of a sore lower back.

Tim Duncan had 34 points and 11 rebounds, his 57th double-double of the season, and David Robinson added 14 points for the Spurs, who had the league’s longest win streak of the season.

With the loss, San Antonio dropped to fourth in the Western Conference playoff race.

Wells, who was knocked woozy in the third quarter when he fell and hit his head against Davis’ knee, sank a three-pointer to break an 87-87 tie with 3:58 to go. The Spurs never got the lead back. They were seven of 15 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Seattle 96, Memphis 82--Gary Payton overcame a severe back strain to score 32 points, leading the SuperSonics at Seattle.

Rashard Lewis added 12 points and eight rebounds for the SuperSonics before leaving early in the third quarter because of a sprained left ankle.

Jason Williams led Memphis with 26 points, but he scored only two points in the second half.

Toronto 81, Miami 80--Morris Peterson scored 21 points, including a game-winning layup with 8.4 seconds left at Toronto.

Antonio Davis added 19 points, and Jerome Williams had 18 for the Raptors, who have won three in a row since Vince Carter opted to have knee surgery.

Rod Strickland had 24 points for the Heat, which has lost four in a row to fall to 11th place in the East, four games behind Indiana. Miami has 12 games remaining.

New Jersey 88, Philadelphia 80--Richard Jefferson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half to lead the Nets at Philadelphia.

The 76ers slipped to 1-9 this season without Allen Iverson, who probably will miss the remainder of the regular season with a broken left hand.

New York 89, Detroit 82--The Knicks’ Lavor Postell scored a career-high 20 points in 22 minutes at Auburn Hills, Mich. New York was without Allan Houston and Othella Harrington, who were sidelined with ankle sprains.

Boston 102, Golden State 99--Paul Pierce of the Celtics scored four points in the last nine seconds at Boston and finished with 33 points.

The Warriors are 7-29 on the road this season, including 2-12 against Eastern Conference teams.

Charlotte 111, Orlando 104--Jamaal Magloire scored 21 points and Jamal Mashburn added 20 at Charlotte, N.C., as the Hornets extended their win streak to seven games.

Magloire, filling in for injured starting center Elden Campbell, was eight of 11 from the field and finished one point short of his career high.

The SuperSonics activated guard Earl Watson and put forward Art Long on the injured list.... Jermaine O’Neal of the Indiana Pacers was suspended for two games without pay and fined $10,000 by the NBA for throwing punches, and teammates Jonathan Bender, Primoz Brezec and Bruno Sundov received one-game bans for leaving the bench in a game against Detroit on Tuesday.
