Guerrero Gets Good Early Reviews

Juxtapose new UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero’s comment, “I want student athletes who, on the playing field, have strong fundamentals, who fire out every night, who never take a night off” with Bob Toledo’s, “The athletic director’s job is to let the coaches coach and give them the weapons to get the job done.”

Guerrero views his position as Toledo’s boss. Toledo sees Guerrero as his facilitator. My prediction is that basketball Coach Steve Lavin will grow under Guerrero’s tutelage and Toledo will be replaced. Let the fun begin!

I’d like to add my voice to what I’m sure will be a large chorus singing the praises of new UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. To say that his presence and sense of integrity will be welcome is no small understatement.

The past few years have caused many a UCLA alum like myself to cringe in embarrassment. From vastly underachieving football and basketball teams to lapses in integrity (and by implication, administrative oversight) that resulted in players obtaining false handicapped-parking permits and losing eligibility for taking gifts.

I hope that Mr. Guerrero maintains the commitment to integrity and scholarship (along with athletics) that has made such a difference during his tenure at UC Irvine. May he be successful in changing the system and not succumbing to a “win at all costs” mentality. Hopefully he will be instrumental in putting the “student” back into the “student athlete” at UCLA.
