Tippett Interests Rangers, Stars

The New York Rangers and Dallas Stars have been granted permission from the Kings to talk to assistant coach Dave Tippett about their head coaching vacancies, NHL sources said Tuesday.

Tippett, 40, is one of the league’s most highly regarded assistants. He oversees the King power play, which led the league this season, and was interim coach for five games in late February and early March while Coach Andy Murray recuperated from injuries suffered in a traffic accident.

A forward who played 11 seasons in the NHL with the Hartford Whalers, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers, Tippett also is a two-time Olympian who was captain of the Canadian team in 1984.

As coach and general manager, Tippett guided the Houston Aeros of the International Hockey League to the Turner Cup championship in 1999. He has been a member of Murray’s staff for the last three seasons.
