OCTA Leader Ignores Facts on Road Upgrades
Re “When the Growing Gets Tough,” Commentary, April 28:
Orange County Transportation Authority Vice Chairman Tim Kennon correctly describes how the OCTA has made more than $6.55 billion in improvements to Orange County’s road system. The real reason behind the success was getting the public to support extending the half-cent sales tax (Measure M) beyond its 2011 sunset provision. Without the tax, OCTA will not be able to subsidize the proposed $1.5-billion Irvine-to-Santa Ana light-rail system.
OCTA has spent more than $15 million over the years to study rail transit for Orange County. All of the studies clearly detail the reasons why rail will never have any effect on automobile traffic congestion. It appears Kennon has ignored the facts in favor of his personal and long-standing support of trains.
