Sheriff’s deputies said Sunday they had no idea who vandalized 25 headstones over the weekend in a historic Orange County cemetery.

The incident is similar to vandalism at two Santa Ana cemeteries last month.

The incident Saturday occurred at Yorba Cemetery on Parkwood Court in Yorba Linda.

Headstones were toppled and some were broken, said Lt. Colin Murphy, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Founded in 1858, the cemetery contains the graves of many Orange County pioneers, including members of the Yorba family, who founded Yorba Linda. It stopped accepting bodies in 1939.

The vandalized headstones were discovered about 7 a.m. Saturday, when police received a call about the damage. In the Santa Ana cases, 33 gravestones, some broken in several places, were knocked down April 9 at Santa Ana Cemetery and St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery next door.

They are two of the oldest graveyards located in Orange County.

No arrests have been made in that case.
