It’s a Short Work Day for UCLA

Keira Goerl pitched a no-hitter for five innings Friday and top-ranked UCLA rolled past Eastern Kentucky, 10-0, in the second round of the NCAA regional softball playoffs at Columbia, S.C.

Goerl, a sophomore who is 29-4, struck out 11 and walked one in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

Stephanie Ramos had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for the Bruins (52-6), who advance to play today against Georgia (59-15), a 1-0 winner over South Carolina. Neither team has lost in the double-elimination regional.

Ramos’ two-out single in the second inning got the Bruins on the scoreboard, driving in Crissy Buck, who had reached on a fielder’s choice. UCLA scored three runs in the third inning and added six in the fifth, gathering eight hits along the way.

Eastern Kentucky ends its season at 37-14.

In Fresno, Cal State Fullerton (52-11) staged a two-out rally in the first inning, then held on to defeat Fresno State, 1-0. The Bulldogs were eliminated with the loss.

Gina Oaks (21-3) pitched a five-hitter, striking out four and not allowing a walk.

With two out in the first, Jenny Topping drew a walk. She took second on Monica Lucatero’s single to center and scored on Yasmin Mossadeghi’s single to left. But the Titans couldn’t do much more against Fresno State pitcher Jamie Southern (33-10), who gave up nine hits and two walks to go with her six strikeouts.

Fullerton advances to play today against California (50-19), a 1-0 winner over Stanford. The Golden Bears beat Fresno State, 1-0, on Thursday.

Seventh-seeded UCLA won the doubles point but dropped four singles matches in losing to second-seeded Georgia, 4-2, in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA women’s tennis championships at Stanford.

The Bruins finish their season at 19-5.

The Southern California Collegiate Baseball Umpires Assn. has upheld UCLA’s appeal of a Cal State Fullerton batting order infraction during Fullerton’s 8-7 victory on April 23 at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The game will resume at the point of protest, with the Titans leading, 7-6, in the top of the ninth inning, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before the teams’ regularly scheduled game at 7 p.m. at Fullerton.
