Scoreless Soccer No Joking Matter

Share

Ah, the first of many poorly contrived jokes prior to the World Cup has appeared [May 1], referring to the excitement of a 0-0 tie, considered wrongly by the author to be somewhat frequent and/or boring.

Is it not possible this year (especially noting The Times’ fearful aversion to potential multicultural insensitivity) to avoid these jokes and the pathetic debates regarding these slights? Most proper football fans are aware of the World Cup’s superiority to the Super Bowl’s self-proclaimed “most watched game in the world” (especially the last two) and major league baseball, and hopefully won’t need to respond, therefore avoiding the whole pathetic but inevitable waste of sportswriting talent.

In fact, if you didn’t bother reporting the World Cup at all, it might be just as well, as the ghettoized coverage is embarrassing as it is, and most fans simply use the Internet for adequate information. This might be a distinct possibility once the United States is eliminated in the first round, and I think most of us would simply rather avoid the whole thing.
