Anderson Is Released

Brady Anderson, who hit 50 home runs for Baltimore in 1996, was released by the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

Anderson, 38, was batting .163 with one home run and five runs batted in. He was in his first season with the Indians after playing 14 seasons with the Orioles, who released him in November.

Anderson batted .202 last year, a career low, and drove in 45 runs.

Shortstop Rich Aurilia was put on the 15-day disabled list by the San Francisco Giants and will have surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow.

Aurilia is batting .259 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. He is expected to be out from four to six weeks.

The Texas Rangers sent reliever John Rocker to triple-A Oklahoma.

Rocker was sent to Oklahoma on April 17 but never reported. He spent several days working with pitching consultant Tom House before being recalled by the Rangers.

Rocker is 0-1 with a 7.53 earned-run average and one save.

Washington Redskin owner Dan Snyder has taken the first step toward bringing a baseball team to the Virginia suburbs of Washington.

Snyder said he has contacted and discussed working with the Virginia Stadium Baseball Authority.
