EUROPE

The European Commission proposed drastic cuts to the European Union’s fishing fleet in an attempt to save fish stocks that are near extinction--but at the cost of sacrificing thousands of jobs on the trawlers.

After weeks of internal wrangling, the commission meeting in Brussels unveiled bitterly disputed plans to cut by 30% to 60% the total time EU trawlers spend at sea, depending on the fish species and region.

That means a reduction of about 8,600 vessels, 8.5% of the boats operating from EU ports. Tens of thousands of the bloc’s 260,000 workers face an uncertain future.
