Hunger Fund-Raiser: Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation event includes a cocktail reception, silent auction and seated dinner. Chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger from Border Grill and Ciudad, Scooter Kanfer from the House, Michael McCarty from Michael’s, Nancy Silverton and Mark Peel from Campanile, Josie LeBalch from Josie, Suzanne Goin from Lucques and Jeffrey Nimer from Lavande are among the featured chefs. Tamale Festival: Oaxacan tamales, Guatemalan tamales and sweet tamales made with strawberries, guavas and cheese are among the tamales for sale at this event celebrating the many types of tamales from Latin America. The festival is at MacArthur Park, site of the city’s only legal sidewalk vending district, where pushcart vendors regularly sell tamales as part of an economic redevelopment program sponsored by the Institute for Urban Research and Development. The institute runs Mama’s Hot Tamales Cafe at 2122 W. 7th St., where tamale vendors are trained. Cancer Fund-Raiser: Champagnes are paired with nearly a dozen dishes from L.A. restaurants at this annual event to benefit the City of Hope and UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, sponsored by Wally’s wine store.
