Lecturers’ Strike Forces Cancellation of Classes

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Dozens of classes were canceled at UC Davis on Thursday as faculty lecturers staged the second day of a planned two-day strike to protest a new policy that has prompted dismissals of lecturers.

A UC Davis spokeswoman said fewer than 100 classes were called off because of the walkout, but a union representative said the total might have been 150. The striking lecturers said they would return to work today.

The lecturers, represented by the University Council-American Federation of Teachers, are challenging a policy calling for lecturers to be dismissed after six years of service. UC Davis officials say the policy was adopted as part of a plan to create more tenured professor positions, which are higher-ranking teaching posts.
