Nederlander to manage Grove

Share

Operation of the Grove Theater of Anaheim will be taken over by the Nederlander Organization under an agreement with the theater’s new owner, the city of Anaheim.

The city bought the 1,700-capacity theater, which occupies part of the Edison International Field parking lot, in September for $6.7 million from Philadelphia-based SMG.

SMG had owned and operated it for the past two years. Anaheim takes ownership on Monday.

No major changes are planned, including the name, at least initially, says Nederlander general manager Mike Garcia.

Garcia said Nederlander will continue to use the Grove as SMG had for some private and corporate functions, “but we are a concert promotion company and we do plan to put concerts in there.”

Under SMG, the Grove has given only minimal competition to the nearby House of Blues in Anaheim, but the presence of the more aggressive Nederlander group, which also books concerts at the adjacent Arrowhead Pond, is expected to raise the Grove’s profile on the Orange County concert scene.
