De Niro to receive award from AFI
Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro was named Friday to receive the 31st American Film Institute Life Achievement Award.
“Robert De Niro is one of the greatest actors of his generation,” said Howard Stringer, chairman of the AFI board of trustees. “In a career that includes over 60 motion pictures, De Niro’s sense of commitment to the character -- both mentally and physically -- has changed the way we look at an actor’s contribution to the art form.”
De Niro, 59, made his screen debut in Brian De Palma’s 1968 “Greetings” and won his first Oscar -- for supporting actor -- as the young Don Corleone in 1974’s “The Godfather, Part II.” He received the best actor award six years later for his performance as prize fighter Jake La Motta in Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.”
De Niro will be given the award at a tribute on June 12 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. The event will be telecast at a later date on USA Network.
