St. Louis Extends Winning Streak to Eight Games

While the St. Louis Blues keep finding ways to win, the New York Rangers are letting games slip away night after night.

Scott Mellanby scored a goal and added an assist, and Doug Weight had two assists Sunday to lead the Blues to a 3-2 victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Weight has 14 points in the last seven games for the Blues, who got 23 saves from Fred Brathwaite. St. Louis extended its winning streak to eight games and is unbeaten in nine. New York is 2-6 in its last eight games.

The Rangers have been hurt following penalties taken by Eric Lindros. Lindros was in the box for high-sticking when Mellanby scored the winner.

Mellanby intercepted a clearing attempt at the left circle and beat Mike Richter at 6:03 of the third period for his third goal of the season.

Columbus 3, Buffalo 2 -- Derrick Walser’s first goal of the season capped a rare third-period comeback as the Blue Jackets improved to .500.

It was only the second time the Blue Jackets have won a game after trailing through two periods. They were 1-75-4-2 when behind after two periods.

The only previous comeback win was a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks on Jan. 27, 2001, after trailing, 1-0, going into the third period.

The victory at Columbus improved the Blue Jackets to 5-5-1-0 -- the latest into a season they have been at .500 in the franchise’s three years.

Phoenix 2, Nashville 1 -- Daniel Briere blasted a power-play goal past Tomas Vokoun with 40 seconds left in overtime as the Coyotes earned their first home win of the season.

Vokoun had 43 saves, but couldn’t deny the Coyotes on their eighth power play after Andy Delmore drew a hooking penalty for wrestling Ladislav Nagy to the ice 3:32 into overtime.

Edmonton 4, Chicago 1 -- Anson Carter scored twice and Tommy Salo stopped 24 shots for the Oilers at Chicago. Ryan Smyth and Shawn Horcoff also scored for the Oilers, who have earned points in four straight games (2-0-1-1).

Detroit 3, Dallas 3 -- Jason Williams’ power-play goal with 6:19 left in regulation gave the Red Wings the tie at Detroit. Williams tipped in a pass from the bottom of the left circle while Dallas forward Brenden Morrow was off for hooking.
