2 Activists Arrested in Logging Fight
Two anti-logging activists were arrested in the latest skirmish between Pacific Lumber Co. and Humboldt County demonstrators.
A man and a woman, who refused to give their names, were arrested Tuesday and booked for investigation of trespassing and interfering with a legal business.
The two sides are disputing the interpretation of a recent Superior Court ruling. Activists say it orders the timber company to halt logging operations. Pacific Lumber disagrees.
At least a dozen people are occupying trees on Pacific Lumber land in Freshwater. One woman calling herself Remedy has been living in an ancient redwood for seven months.
Last week, several tree-sitters on Pacific Lumber land in the Mattole forest were arrested because those trees were scheduled for cutting.
The latest arrests came as Pacific Lumber employees were cutting trees near the site of the protests to build logging access roads, part of the company’s state-approved timber harvest plan, according to a Pacific lumber spokeswoman.
