5 Hurt When Car Hits Huntington Beach Bus Shelter
Four people at a bus stop were injured -- one critically -- Friday when a driver lost control on a rain-slick Huntington Beach street and spun his car into the shelter where they were waiting.
“It just kept going round and round and round,” said Madeline Reid, 63, a passenger in the 1993 Lincoln driven by Lee Vogt, 59, of Anaheim. “I just held on for dear life. I had my eyes closed, held on to my seat belt and thought I was going to die.”
The two were going to a square dance about 6:30 p.m., Reid said, when Vogt tried to change lanes on southbound Beach Boulevard near Warner Avenue and the car spun out of control.
Vogt, who was also slightly injured but declined treatment, blamed the accident on the slippery road.Three of the four injured people were taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, said Sgt. Mike Reynolds of the Huntington Beach Police Department. The most seriously hurt, he said, was a man briefly trapped under the collapsed bus shelter who suffered a head injury that could be serious. The fourth injured pedestrian was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center with unknown injuries, he said
The accident is under investigation.
