PG&E; to Pay $5 Million to Settle Allegations

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. will pay $5 million for local environmental projects to settle allegations that it violated state and federal clean water standards when it owned the electricity plant here on Monterey Bay.

From 1974 to 1998, the year PG&E; sold the plant to Duke Energy, the utility discharged hot cooling water into the harbor, a violation of state permits and the federal Clean Water Act, according to a public notice on the agreement released by the state’s Regional Water Quality Control Board.
