Today’s musicals
Producers of movie musicals (“A razzle-dazzle pitchman,” Nov. 3) have one fundamental stumbling block: While any manner of computer-generated fantasy is accepted -- even encouraged -- by film audiences, musicals remain a tough sell because “people don’t sing and dance in real life.”
The upcoming movie of “Chicago” is already being hailed as a triumph. Perhaps its success will turn the tide. It does seem odd, though, that Rob Marshall should succeed in creating a satisfactory cinematic translation of Bob Fosse’s stage hit when Fosse himself, despite several tries, was unable to do so.
