Placido Domingo will perform Dec. 12 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, his spokesperson announced Tuesday. The concert is part of a renewed effort in Dubai to draw music and sports events to the troubled region, and tickets for the show are included in several tourist packages from European travel agencies.

The tenor and Los Angeles Opera artistic director will perform 10 pieces, three of them duets with Chilean soprano Veronica Villarroel and one duet, sung in Arabic -- a first for Domingo -- with Egyptian singer Ali al-Hajjar. Domingo’s pieces will include selections from Puccini’s “Tosca,” Verdi’s “Otello,” a Spanish operetta, and the song “Tonight” from Bernstein’s “West Side Story.” The singers will be accompanied by the 70-piece Baden-Baden Philharmonic Orchestra.

“For the last seven or eight years, it has been my dream to put together a show like this right here in the UAE,” concert promoter Sheikh Faisal bin Khaled al-Qassimi told Gulf News, a local English-language newspaper.
