Irvine Falls With Parada on Bench

UC Irvine, playing most of the game without foul-plagued, 7-foot center Adam Parada, gave up 11 consecutive points midway through the second half and lost to Western Michigan, 73-62, in a consolation game of the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla.

Mike Williams, who led the Broncos (1-1) with 25 points, scored five in the 11-0 run that pushed Western Michigan’s one-point lead to 59-47 with 7:20 left. The Anteaters (0-2) couldn’t recover as Parada, who had 19 points in a loss Friday night to No. 7 Oklahoma, fouled out at that time with six points in 14 minutes.

Kann and Robby Collum each scored 14 points for Western Michigan.

Mike Hood led Irvine with 11 points.

Jacksonville State 73, UC Santa Barbara 66 -- Poonie Richardson finished with 21 points and made six free throws in the final minute in a consolation-round victory in the BP Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Richardson’s 14 first-half points paced the Gamecocks (1-1) to a 38-29 lead. Jay Heard scored five points early in the second half to make it 44-29.

UC Santa Barbara (0-2) chipped away and two free throws by Josh Davis closed the gap to 67-64 with 35 seconds left. The Gauchos answered Richardson’s six free throws with only one basket.

Heard led the Gamecocks with 23 points and six rebounds. UC Santa Barbara was led by Nick Jones with 20 points and seven rebounds, and Branduinn Fullove with 16 points.
