Suspensions Over, Valenzuela Will Have Three Mounts

Share

Idled by three five-day suspensions, jockey Patrick Valenzuela will make his first appearance of the Hollywood Park meet today. He has three mounts.

The leading rider during the spring-summer meet, Valenzuela hasn’t ridden since Nov. 3 at Santa Anita, but he could wind up in the winner’s circle with his first mount.

You Crack Me Up, a 2-year-old gray son of Slew City Slew, could be the one to catch in the fourth, a 6 1/2-furlong race for $50,000 maidens.

Owned by Joe and Lola Sample and trained by Jack Van Berg, You Crack Me Up will be making his first appearance in a claimer and his first start on Lasix. This will also be the first time he has broken from a post other than the rail. In his latest race, on Oct. 13 at Santa Anita, the gelding pressed a quick pace before tiring and finishing sixth.

Valenzuela will come right back in the fifth, an optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, aboard Sea To See, a 4-year-old Al Mamoon gelding who has failed to win in five starts in 2002. Owned by a partnership and trained by Mike Machowsky, Sea To See will be cutting back to a sprint for the first time in many months.

The jockey will complete his first day back at work on El Fumar, a 3-year-old Smokester gelding who will be making his first start after being claimed for $25,000 by trainer Nick Canani.

Race of the day: Lake William, a stakes winner, will make his first start since April for trainer Richard Mandella in Hollywood Park’s fifth, an optional claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Who’s hot: Cornelio Velasquez. The jockey won six races Sunday at Calder to increase his lead in the standings.

Who’s not: Chance Rollins. The jockey is 0 for 25 through the first 15 days of the Hollywood Park fall meet.
