Hartland de Monarville Molson, 95; Former Head of Family Brewery

Hartland de Monarville Molson, 95, former head of a family brewing dynasty, longtime owner of the Montreal Canadiens and a former member of the Canadian Senate, died Saturday. The cause of death was not announced.

Molson served as president of the Canadiens, a National Hockey League club, and the Canadian Arena Co. from 1957 to 1968. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973.

Born in Montreal in 1907, he served as a director of the family brewing concern for more than 50 years. He held a number of positions, including president, chairman and honorary chairman, until 1983. He retired from the board in 1988.

Molson was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent in 1955 and served in the upper house for 38 years.

He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939 and was wounded during the Battle of Britain.
